In this week’s parsha, Vayishlach, we read one of the most powerful moments in Yaakov’s journey. After an all-night wrestling match with Eisav’s malach, Yaakov prevails. The malach blesses him, saying: “Your name shall no longer be Yaakov, but Yisrael, for you have struggled with angels and men and have prevailed.”
Later in the parsha, Hashem Himself reinforces this name change, telling Yaakov once again that he is now Yisrael. This dual emphasis on Yaakov’s new name invites us to explore its deeper significance.
A King, a Key, and a Chain: A Parable from the Yerushalmi
The Yerushalmi in Taanit offers a beautiful parable to explain this transformation. A king had a very valuable treasure, and it was locked with a tiny key. The key was so small that if it were ever lost, it would be almost impossible to find. To ensure this never happened, the king attached a chain to the key, so even if it were misplaced, it would always be recoverable.
This parable represents Hashem’s relationship with Bnei Yisrael. The name Yisrael contains Hashem’s name (Keil), symbolizing that no matter where we go or what challenges we face, Hashem ensures we are always connected to Him. Even in times of struggle, the “chain” of our connection to Hashem guarantees that we can never be lost.
Struggle as a Path to Connection
Yaakov’s journey to becoming Yisrael reflects this unbreakable bond. His struggle with the malach wasn’t just physical—it was spiritual, representing the challenges we face in maintaining our connection to Hashem in a world full of distractions and hardships. By overcoming these struggles, we affirm our status as Yisrael, the people who are tied to Hashem’s name and mission.
The dual name change also teaches us something profound. The malach recognizes Yaakov’s struggle and his strength, granting him the name Yisrael. But Hashem later confirms it because the ultimate validation of our growth comes not from external recognition but from our relationship with Hashem.
Our Role as Yisrael
The name Yisrael reminds us that, like the key in the parable, we are entrusted with a treasure: our role as Hashem’s people. Through Torah, mitzvot, and our daily struggles, we strengthen the “chain” that ties us to Hashem.
No matter how far we may feel from Him, no matter how small or “lost” we think we are, Hashem’s connection to us ensures that we are never irretrievably lost. The key may be tiny, but the chain is strong.
Takeaway: Strengthening the Chain
As we reflect on Yaakov’s transformation to Yisrael, let us remember the lesson of the Yerushalmi. Every mitzvah we do, every challenge we overcome, and every moment of connection strengthens our bond with Hashem.
Whether we are wrestling with difficulties or basking in moments of peace, our identity as Yisrael remains unshaken. Let’s embrace that role with pride and purpose, knowing that we are always tied to Hashem’s name and His mission for us.
